Intro: [00:00:00] Welcome to Latter Day Miracles, where we share true stories of angels and marvels. Get ready to enjoy accounts from everyday people that remind us of divine love, that we're never truly alone, and the power of faith in these latter days. I'm Haley Hatch Freeman. And I'm Misty Smith. Sit back, open your heart and prepare to be inspired.

Haley Freeman: Hi, welcome to Latter Day Miracles. Today. We are so excited to give you a bonus episode. Sometimes the weeks just line up, uh, where there's an extra week in a month. And so we get to give you a bonus episode. I'm gonna be sharing a story. I, uh, felt impressed to share with you. It's a personal story of me and my brother and his son.

Before we started on, this story. Misty has a message to share, but first I wanna invite anyone that has their own miracle stories to please contact us. [00:01:00] We'd love to share it if you feel impressed that it's something to share. You can contact us at latterdaymiracles.net. There's a form there you can fill out, or you can email us at latterdaymiraclespodcast@gmail.com

We would love to hear from you and to share your story. All right, Misty.

Misty Smith: Great. Okay, so you asked me to think of something to share about the topic of our podcast, the miracles and, and angels and I thought long and hard and I had the opportunity to go out with a friend last night and, eat some dinner. And while we were sitting there, we got on the topic of.

Uh, miracles, which I feel is a topic that comes up a lot as people find out that, , we're doing a podcast. So I keep getting this question. I don't know if you get this question too, Haley but I get this question of how do you [00:02:00] find time to do this? I don't know. Have you had that? Question asked, I dunno, like,

Haley Freeman: Sure. Because I, I'm an author and public speaker too, right? And when I was first, um, felt the impression to start this, I was like, really? One more thing. But I felt so inspired to do this of, I mentioned before, but mainly the message I kept receiving was, Heavenly Father wanted me to share these miracles because.

He was saying, um, He wanted to show what He has been doing, what He is doing, and what He will do for us. And so people will know what they can ask from Him . And so I'm like, how could I say no? Right.

Misty Smith: Yeah.

Haley Freeman: So yeah, so it does add an extra thing on my plate,

but it's important

to do.

Misty Smith: Oh, so good. So, okay, so I've also been asked this question quite a bit, and last night was no different.

I was asked by my friend, so how, how do fit this in your time. We have families we're busy. We are committed to [00:03:00] our community, and, um, we have calling, we have things going on in our life. Um, just like everyone, I'm sure all our listeners do too. And so it got me thinking. And, um, I have a couple notes. So I'm, I'm looking down every once in a while.

Many times , we as members of the church, we, when we're asked to do something else. We say, oh my gosh. Okay. I don't know if we have extra time, but, okay. And, and so with that, we almost center our doubts as our belief. We, our, our doubt is we don't have more time. That's the first thing we say to ourselves.

Um, but then I was thinking about this talk, which I'm sure so many of us have referenced several times, but it's a President Nelson's talk on, , the spiritual momentum. Uh, you know, that one is [00:04:00] so good and he specifically speaks about angels and miracles in that talk, and he gives us five, actions to help us keep spiritual momentum.

But the fourth one is perfect it's right on point with our podcast, and it's number four. Step four was to seek and expect miracles. So I, I want to read a little portion and we'll just. Talk about that for a second. So he says, "Moroni assured us that God has not ceased to be a God of miracles.

Every book of Scripture demonstrates how willing the Lord is to intervene in the lives of those who believe in Him. Miracles take time and may not be exactly what those individuals originally requested from the Lord. In the same way, the Lord will bless you with miracles if you believe in him. Doubting nothing.[00:05:00]

Do the spiritual work to seek miracles. Prayerfully, ask God to help you exercise that kind of faith, I promise that you can experience for yourself that Jesus Christ giveth power to the faint and to them that have no might. He increases strength." Um, so that leads me to the scripture in Isaiah. Isaiah chapter 40, verse 29 says, "he giveth power to the faint and to them that have no might, he increases strength."

Um, so I, I believe that , we have a lot of listeners, I'm sure that fit in many different categories. Uh, they might be listening to this because they wonder how it is that they can receive miracles or if miracles are real, maybe they're doubting that miracles are real and they want to hear other people and their stories and they wonder how they can receive them.[00:06:00]

And I love that it was laid out before us, that we need to put in , the work and start with believing. We need to believe. That it's possible that there is a God. I know that there, we might have a listener too that might doubt that God really has a hand in our lives. Maybe some believe that he just sits and watches.

Haley Freeman: Sure.

Misty Smith: Um, but I think, I think, and I believe, and, and this is part of my testimony that I, I felt like I needed to share that once we take that step to believe and ask even if, if you doubt, let's shift that doubt. Instead of putting your doubts before your belief, we need to start believing before our doubts.

And so that might mean you look and you find the good, you find God in your [00:07:00] life every day. And you might be wondering how, I go through my life. I go, I don't really see him. Maybe to some that you don't see him, but maybe take a second and think, I got home safely for my commute today. Did God have a hand in that?

Absolutely.

Haley Freeman: Yeah.

Misty Smith: You're safe. You're maybe you slept through the night in peace and that's where you start seeing God is just the tiny details. , And for those maybe that, that are on here and they do believe and they just wonder, why not me? Why don't I receive, some amazing miracles.

Maybe we need to start asking Him. And, and I love that President Nelson said that. He said, ask,

Haley Freeman: yeah,

Misty Smith: God, God wants relationship with us. , He wants that so much. And, how are we expected to receive if we don't ask? And put that faith, that trust the action. [00:08:00] So maybe take a second today and think what it is.

That we can do to build a relationship with God today. And I bear you my testimony that if you try and you ask him if you wanna see him in your day, maybe take a second ask for that Ask. Specifically, I wanna see your, your hand in this. I would love to expect miracles, but I'm struggling in this.

Please help me see

this. Mm-hmm.

Haley Freeman: And maybe he's sending a miracle in just a different way than you expected.

Misty Smith: Yes. Ooh.

Haley Freeman: Mm-hmm.

Misty Smith: That's, that's good. And, I also love that, um, President Nelson says it takes time.

Haley Freeman: Mm-hmm.

Misty Smith: And in everything , I look back sometimes at my story or other guest stories, and I think there are a lot of details.

All of our lives and things take time.

Haley Freeman: Mm-hmm.

Misty Smith: So, I bear you my witness that with time and effort, you [00:09:00] can see miracles in your daily life. It might take time and sometimes it might not even be in this life that we see everything and understand everything but believe. And put Him in the position where He can help you believe.

Haley Freeman: Sure.

Misty Smith: So I say that name, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Haley Freeman: Thank you. Amen. Mm-hmm. I I appreciate that. So, um, I'm gonna be telling a story that is, uh, very personal to our family. It involves my brother and his son who, was diagnosed with leukemia. But let me go ahead and give a little background. I told my story of my near death experience in our first episode.

So if you want a little bit more background to that, go ahead and check out our first episode. But in my near death experience, I was with my sister Heidi, and, um, when she passed away. My dad, he said he was leaving his home and even [00:10:00] though it was out of se season, there was a perfect little pink rose on their bush.

And so he picked that rose for her and he took it and laid it in her casket. And, and since then it was kind of our symbol or a reminder. Whenever we saw Pink Rose, we would think of my dear little sister Heidi, and we would, take those to , her headstone and to the cemetery. And also another little connection to the rose, I guess, is I'm the, well, the only living daughter of four brothers.

And so he would always call me the, the rose amongst the thorns. Kind of a little joke, a joke there. But anyways, we have this rose connection and my dad was always my biggest supporter in life, and I've always been a daddy's girl. And , whenever he'd go out into the ranch or anything, he'd always bring me home flowers of sorts.

Misty Smith: So sweet.

Haley Freeman: So sweet. And uh, he, whenever, like I, I mentioned, I'm an author and things and he [00:11:00] was like my biggest supporter and fan of those books and he'd always carry in his little pocket, uh, one of my little bookmarks. So that would advertise for those books. And anywhere he'd go, he'd be like, oh, I gotta check out my daughter's books and , such a supporter.

And, um, not too long ago , he passed away. And, um, you know, obviously pretty heartbreaking for all of us, for, for me to lose my dad. Um, so when he passed away, I went and I put a single pink rose on his casket, and it's just kind of been , our thing.

And so I take , a pink rose when I can to him and, anyway, so so now, I'm wanting to go to Jason and his family. He has, three daughters , and one son named Brady and so there's the two older daughters. Brady. And then the youngest is another daughter named Makall

And when Brady was just three and a half years old, they noticed, , he wasn't feeling well and doing well. And at first they just kind of thought, oh, it's just like the flu [00:12:00] seasons, cold seasons, ? But then there's just few extra signs of something not quite right. But then when they took him to the doctor, they're thinking, oh, maybe ear infection or something.

Mm-hmm. But he was diagnosed with, . Leukemia and the doctors there said, you need to take him straight from here to Primary Children's Hospital.

Misty Smith: Wow.

Haley Freeman: So, you know mom's worst nightmare.

Misty Smith: Mm-hmm.

Haley Freeman: Family's worst, worst nightmare. And so. That's what they did. And he was, um, very high risk leukemia because of a few other conditions that were happening at the same time.

And, their little baby Makall was only, , four months at the time. So this is really hard 'cause , Stephanie my sister-in-law, she was nursing , and so it's really hard to have to go up to the hospital and be separated and trying to. Have this little baby and

Misty Smith: absolutely

Haley Freeman: really hard time for their family.

Misty Smith: Mm-hmm.

Haley Freeman: And we're all very worried, obviously. , And he had to start doing all these chemo treatments and it's really hard on a little guy, only three and a [00:13:00] half years old. And, and this went on for three and a half years.

Misty Smith: Oh, wow.

Haley Freeman: Because of how high risk he was in other , complications he had.

So it was a long, long. journey for them. And, the day to day of that you can only imagine.

Misty Smith: Mm-hmm.

Haley Freeman: So after about three and a half years, they did feel like they got, taken care of enough that the doctors are like, okay, he can go ahead and ring the bell that he his, cancer

has been beaten , but they didn't really feel like this was the end. They, Stephanie and Jason, both didn't feel really good about that, but he was able to do that. And , that was in November.

Misty Smith: Okay.

Haley Freeman: So here we are into the holidays, but mm-hmm. The whole time he just was so sick, even during Christmas time, like something's just not right here.

And, so

Misty Smith: he stayed sick, like he was, he,

Haley Freeman: yeah. So , the cancer cells and things were cleared, so they were thinking, okay, he's okay, but he still wasn't really acting like himself and they just knew in their gut something wasn't right.

Misty Smith: [00:14:00] Okay.

Haley Freeman: Still, and even though , they were home now. They had Christmas at home, things like that.

But. Uh, you know, things just didn't feel right , but during that time they were able to get some things done. They felt like they just needed to take care of some things they needed to do. Their other daughter needed, um, some leg surgery. They got that taken care of.

When he was always throwing up, it was not just regular throw up, it's toxic 'cause it's, he's thrown up chemo.

Misty Smith: Oh, okay.

Haley Freeman: So they had carpet needed to be replaced and stuff. So it was just, um, safer for them and their family and their kids, you know, so they got that taken care of. They just felt like they needed to get things taken care of.

Mm-hmm. So they had about six months to do all these things. And then, in April, so about six months later, he started getting this rash all over his body and then he just wasn't feeling well. And so they took him to the doctor and the doctor said, yeah, this is cancer.

This rash is cancer.

Misty Smith: Oh my goodness.

Haley Freeman: And yeah. And so they headed back up to Primary Children's and the cancer was back.

Misty Smith: Oh no.

Haley Freeman: And this time worse.

Misty Smith: Oh [00:15:00] no. So, oh my gosh.

Haley Freeman: I know things that had never happened before. Like it was, actually in his central nervous system now.

Misty Smith: Okay.

Haley Freeman: And the cancer was stronger and things were not, responding like before.

So they had to do some, a really dangerous treatment called induction chemotherapy.

Misty Smith: Okay.

Haley Freeman: So Stephanie ended up staying up at Primary Children's Hospital for over a month, just staying with him there. And, Jason was able to stay with their, daughters. I mean, it's so hard, for the little girls not being to see her mom, their mom, but she was up there saving Brady's life, you know?

Misty Smith: Right. Oh my goodness.

Haley Freeman: Just a complete hero. I mean this, this mother Stephanie's just like a hero. The best mom you can imagine.

Misty Smith: Mm-hmm.

Haley Freeman: To do these treatments. They had to go in ICU for each of these treatments 'cause they're so dangerous and. So, um, extensive and just horrible treatments, you know?

Misty Smith: Mm-hmm.

Haley Freeman: It was about 11 o'clock at night, and [00:16:00] this kid,, he was a trooper. He was just brave and just taking on these, all these treatments and all this pain and things and just being so brave. But one night, it was 11 o'clock at night.

They were about to do some of the treatments and he just started screaming and crying in this ho horrible, horrific pain. And Stephanie knew, she was like, this is not normal for him to be screaming in this kind of pain

Misty Smith: uhhuh.

Haley Freeman: And so she told one of the nurses , something is wrong, something was wrong. We need to check this out.

This is not normal for him. Mm-hmm. And so they took him right away and started doing, x-rays. , It was his stomach area that was in pain they found out he had something called , pneumatosis.

Misty Smith: Okay.

Haley Freeman: And this is something that affects the cells of the digestive system.

Misty Smith: Oh.

Haley Freeman: And it's very, scary, thing to have happen. And they said that they wanted to remove his colon.

Misty Smith: Okay.

And oh my goodness.

Oh, what oh my gosh. Things are going through already and. Okay. Yeah.

Haley Freeman: Yeah. Really [00:17:00] scary. And she was up there alone. Mm-hmm. And so she hurries and calls my brother Jason and says, get up here.

This is really a scary thing happening. Mm-hmm. So he hurried and dropped the girls off to , the grandparents , and he hustled up there as fast as he could and they'd given Brady some morphine and things for the pain. And they were just praying and praying like what to do. This added complication on top of fighting this cancer.

And so Jason, uh, gave him a blessing, a priesthood blessing. And Stephanie said that she had never in her life, felt the spirit of healing so strong and the power of the priesthood so strong as she did

Misty Smith: Wow.

Haley Freeman: In the middle of the night there, in that hospital room. And he gave him a blessing that the.

Pneumatosis would leave his body and never return.

Misty Smith: Wow.

Haley Freeman: And that angels would be there to bear him up. When it became morning, they went and did another x-ray on him, and the pneumatosis was gone. [00:18:00]

Misty Smith: Oh my goodness. What a miracle. Oh my goodness.

Haley Freeman: So it was completely gone. And Stephanie and Jason were like, yeah, we know why it was gone.

Yeah. And the nurse was like, no, you don't understand this. This is not happening. Yeah. This is not an illness or a condition that just leaves.

Misty Smith: Right.

Haley Freeman: So. Um, they didn't understand how this was possible

Misty Smith: uhhuh,

Haley Freeman: that it was just gone. So, obviously they didn't have to remove his colon, but

Misty Smith: Right.

Haley Freeman: They still wanted to be on the safe side and they told him to take a 10 day Gut rest. And so he was allowed no food, no water for 10 days. This little child.

Yeah.

And it was,

Misty Smith: oh my gosh, I can't even imagine. As parents, you try to comfort your child.

Like , my husband's constantly telling my kids I can't, I'd never want to see you guys go hungry. Mm-hmm. And as parents, that's what, and you have to just. Sit there and watch this little [00:19:00] boy go through this

Haley Freeman: for 10 days. Yeah. Oh my. So she would, so Stephanie would just, um, swab his mouth out to keep it moist.

Misty Smith: Oh.

Haley Freeman: And then he wasn't allowed any food or water for that time. So some time went by and , they got through that trial and they were still doing the treatments and things. They were going in for a surgical, procedure, and Stephanie felt impressed to tell 'em, will you please check his spinal fluid

Misty Smith: Oh,

Haley Freeman: and see

if the cancer cells , are clear in that or where they're at on that.

And they did. And they came back and they found that the cancer cells were really high in the spinal fluid. And so that was, a disappointment. But because they caught that, they discovered that the induction chemotherapy was not enough. It was not working, and so his body just kept, even though they would like kill the, [00:20:00] cancer and get the cells lower.

It was just recreating it. His body was trained to create these cancer cells.

Misty Smith: Oh, wow.

Haley Freeman: The treatments were just not working. And so they decided kind of the last, um, resort that they needed to do was gonna be a bone marrow transplant.

Misty Smith: Okay. Wow.

Haley Freeman: Yeah. So, they started going through the trainings and things that they needed to do to do this.

'cause radiation is nasty.

Misty Smith: Yeah.

Haley Freeman: It destroys and kills everything in the body. It has to get it to nothing so that when the bone marrow of the new, , donor goes in, the body won't attack that,

Misty Smith: so you wanna make sure that it accepts the new

Haley Freeman: Exactly.

Uhhuh. And so the best chance of a match are siblings.

Misty Smith: Okay.

Haley Freeman: He had the two older sisters and then the younger baby sister, but at this time she was four getting ready to turn five.

The chance for the higher amount of stem cell count would be the older children. Mm-hmm. And so I [00:21:00] think they're probably hoping for the older children because

Misty Smith: Right,

Haley Freeman: you would have more stem cells, but , the match was the baby was the younger child.

Misty Smith: I can't even imagine. Like, I, I can't imagine , the struggle.

The parents struggle because your baby, you know, it's the baby in the

family.

Haley Freeman: Mm-hmm.

Misty Smith: Oh my

gosh.

Okay.

Haley Freeman: But the miracle part of it was that she was a perfect match.

Misty Smith: Wow.

Haley Freeman: So that's a blessing that she was the perfect match and at least someone in the family match.

Misty Smith: Mm-hmm.

Haley Freeman: They went ahead and, were going to go forward with this plan. But they had a date to do it and then three days before that date, they found too many cancer cells still in his body where they couldn't go forward with this plan.

And it's hard 'cause they know this is, his life is on the line. They needed to get this done as soon as possible, but, he just couldn't get cleared for it. 'cause of the too many cancer cells.

Misty Smith: Mm-hmm.

Haley Freeman: He ended up having nine full body radiation treatments to try to [00:22:00] get ready for this bone marrow.

And that's hard on a little guy. Of course. As a family we were all worried. Everybody was praying and worried about him. , So one night, this comes back to my story a little bit, so since I had my near- death experience, um, the veil has been really thin for me at times. And not all the time, but just once in a while when there's, special occasions, the veil will be open for me.

And it happened several times before this. But one night. It was in March of, of 2019. So right when they're going through all this, I was in my bedroom, so at night I kinda have this routine where I come into the bedroom and at the time I maybe watch a show or two or something 'cause I wind down, right?

And then I turn the TV off. Or let it just go to like this little screensaver situation on my TV will just like start flashing these [00:23:00] screensavers, it will be just nature scenes or animals or something, I don't know, just random things on my TV at the time of 2019. Anyway, so it was just doing that and I just let it, go, so it kinda gives a little bit of a light in the bedroom as I'm reading

I was reading some church books or, and then I read my scriptures and so I was doing that and so the room was already filled with , the spirit and I was feeling, , the spirit, the Holy Ghost , in the room. And, and then all of a sudden I felt my dad and I heard him say , hi Angel, like you always call me.

Something like that. And I heard him and I'm like "hi Dad" And then for some reason, this is kind of, um, funny, but it's been like a long time since I'd had, uh, an occurrence like this. And I was, I feel so much pressure thinking like, okay, I gotta get these messages right, because whenever I have had, I guess you'd say a visitation, I don't know what the right , word [00:24:00] is, like when the veil has been open it's usually, usually a message for somebody else.

I wanna make sure I get it right because I feel like this eternal weight of responsibility on me to make sure I'm accurate in these , these messages. He came in , and he is like, I have a message and. And I'm like, okay, I wanna make sure I get this right. And I was kind of doubting myself.

Okay, am I, is it okay? This is my dad, obviously it's my dad. I feel him my sense him . I knew he was right here on my right side. , But I'm like, okay, can you just give me a reassurance that this is you and it's gonna work. I'm gonna get this message right.

I don't know why, I was just worried and doubting myself 'cause it'd been a little while since I had this happen. And he said. Look up at the tv and I looked up and this is what I saw.

That's so sweet. It was a rose on

Haley Freeman: the tv.

Wow.

Haley Freeman: And so I knew that it was gonna be okay, that I was gonna be [00:25:00] able to trust this message. And that was my, it was my dad, obviously. It was my dad. I'm like, okay, thank you.

And he said, I've been visiting my little buddy

Misty Smith: ho.

Haley Freeman: And that's what he always had called Brady. And then he instantly showed me, a picture in my mind, and I saw him at the hospital and I saw my dad next to the hospital bed holding Brady's hand in one hand and him like kind of padding and, and stroking his other handle hand next to the hospital bed.

And then , he said, he's gonna be all right. And I go, okay, Dad, yeah, I need to get this right. He's gonna be alright. Or it's gonna be all right In the grand eternal perspective of eternity and eternal family is like, it's gonna be alright. Or, or he's gonna be right.

And he goes, no, he is gonna be alright. He, he is gonna be alright. He, he increased his volume with each, he, he, [00:26:00] he.

And then he, then he showed me a, like a movie reel almost. And I saw Brady growing up. I saw Brady, uh, just a little bit older, playing with his siblings, and I saw him as like a tween, like a 12-year-old. And I saw him a little bit older and then a little bit older. These little images , kept coming into my mind of him growing up, and then I saw him as.

Like an 18-year-old, 19 year old-ish. And he was in a suit looking just handsome. Just, just like himself. But I remember thinking, wow, he looks so much like my brother Jason. And he was, had his light, light blonde hair and stout and

Misty Smith: so cute

Haley Freeman: and just grown up, like an adult age 18, you know?

Misty Smith: Right.

Haley Freeman: So I saw that he had grown and he was all right.

Misty Smith: Wow.

Haley Freeman: And then he told me how much Heavenly Father loved us and was aware of our [00:27:00] situation and he was aware of Stephanie and Jason and their pain and their worry, and he said that they could make it through this trial but they needed some relief of the worry and stresses of if he was gonna make it.

Misty Smith: Mm-hmm.

Haley Freeman: They just needed to know and have a little comfort, just a little relief

Misty Smith: mm-hmm.

Haley Freeman: Of the stress, of the worry of is he even gonna live?

Misty Smith: Yeah.

Haley Freeman: And if they knew and could receive this message that he would be okay, then that would give them the strength to go through all of this and that they needed to know.

Then he, he sent his love to us and then he, he left. So the next morning I call Stephanie and I'm like, so, I have a message for you.

Misty Smith: Oh, that's, that's wracking right there.

Haley Freeman: But, and then she told me that she had been fasting and praying all night. Yeah. And that was what she was asking is just to know if Brady would be okay.[00:28:00]

Misty Smith: Amazing.

Haley Freeman: So that was a message that she needed to hear and that we all, I think, needed to know. My mom was so worried about her grandbaby and

Misty Smith: right

Haley Freeman: her grandson.

So

Misty Smith: I, I love the comfort that you, um, express. I think this kind of goes back to the message I was sharing at the beginning, , that God really does care.

He cares for us so much. But what I love is that your family was doing their part, and that goes back to what President Nelson said, ask.

Haley Freeman: Mm-hmm.

Misty Smith: He wants to hear from you. He loves you so much. It's asking, He can do miracles, but he needs to hear from you. He loves our agency so much. He respects us so much. So when your family took a second, and I love that you express it, Stephanie, right?

You said?

Haley Freeman: Mm-hmm.

Misty Smith: She confirmed she was doing her part fasting.

Haley Freeman: She was fasting, praying

that

night.

Misty Smith: I love that so much. She, she was doing her part and God was [00:29:00] able to work through you for them, for your entire family. What? What a beautiful, beautiful story and honestly moment for your entire family.

That's incredible.

Haley Freeman: Yeah.

So then we get finally Brady's numbers cleared and he was able to have his transplant.

Misty Smith: Okay.

Haley Freeman: And here we are with little, little Makall, the youngest of the family.

Misty Smith: Oh yeah, that's right.

Haley Freeman: And the transplant team, they said their goal was to collect, if they could collect around 3 million stem cells.

Misty Smith: Okay.

Haley Freeman: They would be, so thankful. if they could just get that much, they feel like they could try to get this to work. They said, maybe, maybe we could do it. If we could get two, 2 million stem cells, we could try to do this.

Misty Smith: Okay.

Haley Freeman: Jason gave 'Makall a blessing.

Before the operation he blessed that her stem cells would multiply and be adequate for Brady. And when they were done, the transplant team came out and said, we got almost [00:30:00] 6 million stem cells.

Misty Smith: Wow. That's incredible.

Haley Freeman: Yeah.

Misty Smith: Wow.

Haley Freeman: Yeah. Just a little bit after this, we got a text from Stephanie.
